Soccer Drills – Goalkeeping
General Drills
During a soccer
game, the goalkeeper has a very important role to play. They must receive
thorough coaching and be in the best shape possible. The job of the goalkeeper
requires agility and skill. Here are three general drills that the soccer
goalkeeper can perform to get himself or herself into top shape.
The first drill
involves two other players and the goalkeeper. With the goalkeeper guarding the
post, the two players are positioned to form a complete triangle. Each player
will take turns tossing high balls to the opposite end of the goal post. The
goalkeeper must tip the balls away from the post as quickly as he can. This
drill teaches the goalkeeper agility.
The second drill
involves another player and the goalkeeper. With the goalkeeper kneeling, the
player tosses soccer balls towards the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper must stop
these soccer balls while still in the slightly raised position on their knees.
This drill sharpens the goalkeeper’s skills.
The third drill
involves another player and the goalkeeper. Soccer balls are placed into a half
circle around the goal post with the goalkeeper guarding it. The player will
toss the balls towards the goal and the goalkeeper must stop them. This is a
great drill as the goalkeeper must practice their diving saves to stop the ball,
and they become accustomed to stopping the ball at every angle. This drill
teaches the goalkeeper both agility and skill.
With repeated
practice of these drills, the goalkeeper will definitely improve their game.
