What is the right formation?

Formation and what is the correct formation is a continual problem for all
managers. The most common types of formation are 5-3-2, 4-3-3 and 4-4-2. The
defensive formation is seen to be 5-3-2 mostly used by away teams to neutralize
the advantage of the home team. 4-3-3 is seen as a more carefree attack minded
approach to the game and will cause opposition defense problems. 4-4-2 is the
formation adopted by many English league clubs that gives solidity to defense
and midfield but also numbers to attack with.

Which is right and which should you pick? That question really relies on
ascertaining some information. What players are at your disposal and what
players / formation is the opposition playing?

What players are at your disposal ?

Do you have really good defenders, good attackers, quick players?. Whilst training
players it is quick to see which types of player you have. The trick is to build
a team formation to utilize all of their skills regardless of the opposition.

For example a player that will run and run, no stamina or fitness problems has to go
in midfield giving support to both defense and attack.

A player who is naturally quick would be best utilized on the wing or upfront
giving them the freedom and room to use this speed running up and down, going
past defenders and chasing the ball.

A good header of the ball would be best as an attacker or a defender. Are they
best at defensive or attacking headers? Can they score goals with their feet as
well as head or are they best at tackling?
